View Full Version : Chrono Trigger

Over the day before and Thanksgiving Day I was up at my cousin's house and after the gathering on Turkey day had died down and my cousin left for work (he works for a general store, so they were open Thanksgiving Day) I was rumaging through his old games and I stumbled upon the original SNES version of Chrono Trigger, so I whipped out his old SNES out and started playing.

The feeling of Nostalgia was great. I felt like I found a part of me that had been missing for a decade. So I was wondering, who here has played this marvel of a game before besides me?

I personally think this is one of the best RPGs of all time. I originally played it when I was 8 or 9 and when I played earlier, roughly a decade later in which time I have played many RPGs including many of the FFs and I still think Chrono Trigger is one of the best:) . It was ground-breaking for it's day in terms of graphics (it was originally launched on the SNES, so it was good for it's time) storyline complexity and depth, combat system, in battle visuals (like the techniques and what not) and even down to the musical scoring (in fact many modern games can't compare to the variety and just overall goodness of the musical scoring in CT). To be honest the only thing modern games over it is 3-dimensional graphics. Everything else still pales in comparison. Also if you look at any review for the game you won't find a single one below a 9 out of 10 and many that I have seen are around 9.5 or so out of 10.

I really have to give credit to Square for this one. Kudos on one of the greatest games of all time:)

I played it when I was 13 or so.
One of the best, that's for damn sure:)
I should put it on my laptop and play during downtime in class...

I played it. I think this game holds the most hours of my life. Like, 800 or so.

Ive gotten all endings, all items, all secrets, And I had a file on my SNES where I almost maxed out everyone, and I could take Lavos down in like, three turns if I had Crono, Ayla, and Marle. Then the battery reset. :(

Oh, well. PS1 version is coming along great! :p

Amirius
11-28-2004, 01:05 AM
Yeah, the PS1 version is pretty cool. I don't like many of the CG cut scenes since they got the guy who does DBZ to draw the characters. I mean Crono looks like Goku and nowhere near his 17 years old more like 25 or something and Magus looks like Vegeta. Come on, wtf, honestly. Although the scene where Frog takes up the Masamune is just kick ass:D .

I have to beat it though, curious what kind of CG scene they rigged up for when you beat Lavos.

Captain Bryan
11-28-2004, 01:16 AM
That's because the guy who did DBZ drew the characters in the first place:p

haven't played that game in ages. But definitely one of the best RPG's I've ever played. The music for it was great. I especially loved the Zeal and Shalla themes. And how many games out there give you alternate endings? (and so many, to boot)

Drakon
11-28-2004, 03:28 AM
Schala was great. The whole soundtrack is great. I have it ripped on my PC.

Amirius
11-28-2004, 01:45 PM
I could listen to Schala's theme for hours:x .

Although one of my favorite songs in the game is "Dance with Death" (aka Magus's theme) and the music from the fight with Lavos's second form(not his shell but not his core. The weird looking one with the two arms and three eyes and no lower body).

Amirius
11-30-2004, 12:40 AM
It's not really all that hard. IIRC he's worth 10 exp a fight and to get to level 10 you need somewhere around 100 or 200 exp (I think). I always used him to get to level 8 or 9 and sometimes even 10 to make sure I was ready for the upcoming boss fight.

Captain Bryan

I need to go level up some more, I just got out of the future, and now I have to beat that boss in 1000 AD but he's too hard:(

The Dragon Tank?

Captain Bryan

No. I've just reached the end of time.
I had to level up at that part too though:p

Amirius

Your talking about Heckran right. God is he a bastard. Best thing to do is use Lucca and Marle and their Antipode dual tech and let Crono do the healing and the occasional Lightning attack.

Captain Bryan
11-30-2004, 01:16 PM
I don't have Antipode?
I guess I DO have to level:p

Drakon
11-30-2004, 03:30 PM
I always used Anitpode and Lightning, and when they needed to be healed, Id use Aura Whirl.

Captain Bryan
11-30-2004, 03:56 PM
Yeah, Aura Whirl looks like it would work awesome.

Drakon
11-30-2004, 04:27 PM

You should have it:confused: . Once you get your magic from the guy (I think his name is Shiddo but I can't remember) just take Lucca and Marle into a battle and they should learn it afterward. All it requires is the basic Fire and Ice spell, so I don't know why you don't have it:confused: .

I got it today, after leveling for about 4 minutes:p

How do you get different endings, anyway?

Let's see, one you get by beating the game with Crono, Marle and Lucca. Another if you beat it in any combo except the afformentioned one. Several others you get for just beating the game at earlier stages of it, such as your fight with Lavos in the Ocean Palace (new game+ naturally;) ). There are probably others that I don't know about or forgot but that should give you roughly 5 to 6 endings right there.

Drakon
12-05-2004, 02:12 AM
Off the top of my head, I can think of a few.

1---Beat it with revived Crono, and any combo.
2---Beat it without reviving Crono, and any combo.
3---Same as 1, but with Magus.
4---Same as 2, but with Magus.
5---Beat it from the Black Omen.
7---Drive the Epoch through Lavos.
8---Beat it only with Crono.
9---Beat it before Destroying Magus in the Middle Ages, before he summons Lavos.
10---After going to Zeal, DO NOT CHARGE MARLE'S PENDANT AT THE MAMMON MACHINE!! Go the the End of Time, and kill Lavos from the bucket.
11---Die. :)

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, and I know that there are more.

Captain Bryan
12-05-2004, 03:21 AM
Hehehe, sounds interesting:D
I've seen the 'die' one though:p

Drakon

Gee, ya think?

12---Die against Lavos on the day of Lavos. Same as DIE, but with more detail

Captain Bryan

Much more detail:p

Yeah I have FFVI, but my bro told me to finish CT before I started, otherwise I'd get the stories mixed up and junk. I started playing a little bit of it into the beginning and just got out of Figaro Castle. I just want to point out (and some of you may hate me for this), I think there's just too much story in FFVI, and not enough game. But, that's just my opinion. And the graphics are crap, too. Like, the enemies don't even move. And when they attack, they just... flash, and your HP goes down. *shakes head* It's sad... anyway I still think CT is the best.

So, I responded the way I would expect anyone old enough to remember seeing the Wizard just for a glimpse of SMB3 would respond....

I'm sorry that the graphics aren't 3D Real Time with a bazillion polygons, but the gameplay and the story more than make up for it. I mean, hell, you kids are lucky. Growing up, all we had were 8bits, and we had to love it or go outside!

Damn little punks, don't know how good they have it now:smad: .

Meh. I personally think the FF franchise is going downhill now. Well, actually I think the series hit rock bottom with the release of XI but I can't believe they named that a true FF game. Anyways, there are exceptions like the newest Star Ocean game, but it seems to me that RPGs are slowing becoming more about pretty backgrounds, flashy battle visuals, and realistic graphics more than they are about gameplay and story; and that really sucks if you ask me.

I completely agree. Even these new systems are proof of that. Everytime someone complains about the graphics of an older game, I want to kill them in their sleep. On one hand, I understand that you are gonna be spending a lot of time in front of this game, so you at least want something pretty. On the other hand, there's a difference between "bad graphics" and "2-D graphics" [though there are some Bad 2-D graphics].

Personally, I am kinda happy that Hironobu Sagaguchi left Square, and is now headhunting from within Squeenix, in order to have a company like "The Old Squaresoft." Sadly, Enix is just focusing on their half of the merger, and screw Square. Man, if they would just actually work together, imagine the possibilities. :(

Amirius

Hehehe, I finally did it:D . I finally beat the PS1 version of the game:D . There wasn't a big cinema scene where they show you killing Lavos or anything and for awhile I didn't think they had added anything new at all.

They were sneaky though. After you beat the game and go through all of the goodbye things (for ending 1 they call it. Where you go throught the entire game and then beat Lavos at the end.) and go through all of the original SNES credits, they go into a PlayStation version credits and at the end of that they give a few added cinema scenes. It starts off with Crono and Marle gettin hitched (can't tell me you didn't see that one comin;) ), then it goes to a (rather hilarious I thought) scene back in the prehistoric ages where Kino and Ayla get hitched. Next there was a rather superb scene where Glenn (not Frog, Glenn:eek:  ) gets formaly knighted or honored or something where the king taps his sword on your shoulders. The entire thing wraps up with Lucca walking a forest trail with a minature Robo she apparently built and she stumbles across an infant with Schala's pendant and decides to take the infant home with her (this is probably the biggest tie in to Chrono Cross, for those of you who have played it;) )

Just beating the game again, man that was a rush or nostalgia. I know i've said it before but I honestly think this is one of the greatest games of all time and forever will be:D

I missed this post!:o
Do you think they have different PS1 ending credits for every ending that CT had?
That would be rather impressive!
I think that I'm going to try to finish off FF8 and then FF9, since I'm on disc 3 with both of em... and then go for FF7, and back to CT on my OS X emulator.:)

Sadly, no I don't believe so. If nothing else probably just a new set of scenes if you chose not to revive Crono. There is a grand total of 14 new cinematic scenes and I have access to 13 of them, i'm only missing one, so i'm willing to bet that's what that is. About the only difference is they give you two of the final scene, one with credits and one without.
