I got it way back on wednesday, I just never got around to posting about it.
There ARE a few changes.
They re-did the Jabba the Hutt scene, HUGE improvement he looks a lot more like Jabba now, compaired to the 1997 cut.
Greedo DOES shoot first, I don't know why Lucas felt the need to change that, it was fine the way it was..
Everything is perfect quality, the sound and picture are fantastic.
I'm glad to finally have them on DVD, my VHS tapes are almost worn out.:p

There are two things that I heard that they did differently and need verified:

First, did they say that Darth Vader actually died before and that he was brought back to life by the Sith. Second, does Darth Vader really not know Luke is his son in this version and he needs to be told by emporer Papalatine or whatever his name is. I heard that these changes were made and they kind of ruin the whole thing for if they are.

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 03:16 AM
Neither.
One thing that I heard that didn't happen was that Chewie got a medal. I wouldn't have minded that.:)

I much preffered it when Solo shot first.

I think that Lucas really fucked up in changing that.

Solo shooting first showed that he was street wise and clever. The rest of the movie gradually brought out his good/soft side.

I was really disappointed in that change! :(

Captain Bryan

Yeah, me too.:(

Here's how I see it:

Lucas is a money whore.

Eventually he will release the Original non-edited movies on DVD simply to make more money. Probably in 2 to 3 years. Or maybe when the sequels come out (and we all know he's going to make sequels...he's dropped subtle hints about it since he started the prequels to the point now where he is even saying he has ideas for them).

When those DVDs come out...I will buy them.

Or I may just wait 10 years or so until he releases the DVDs with the Biggs on Tatioone and other deleted scenes.

At any rate...the SE DVDs are just one box set in many that will come out...I'm gonna wait for the set that has the real OT on it.

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 01:29 PM
I think what he's going to do is this..
When EP III comes out on DVD he's going to make a big super pack of all the SW movies, and put everything he can into them.
and if he does make the 3 post movies, Kyle Katarn better be in them, and maybe he should let someone else write them..

Amirius
09-28-2004, 02:21 PM
Did Katarn have anything to do with the movies, or was he a character they invented just for the game.

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 02:43 PM
He was invented for the games, but he's a really damn good character and his story fits in with the rest of the Starwars characters pretty darn well.

Amirius

I still have Dark Forces installed my other PC. Teh game is the roxxor:D . Katarn kicks major ass

Matt
09-28-2004, 04:22 PM
Katarn rocks.

There should be a Kyle Katarn owned picture but his name really doesn't lend itself to it. It would be like "Katorwned..... ?"

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 04:27 PM
Kyleowned... KAowned(no wait, that would be a capt bryan one..)
:p
You're right.

Amirius
09-28-2004, 04:43 PM
I should make a pic of Katarn and have it say "I kicked Darth Vaders ass".:p There really isn't a owned accronym that can along with Kyle though.

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 04:49 PM
Wasn't that a vader clone, or something?

Amirius
09-28-2004, 04:53 PM
Lol, I'm not entirely sure. The only game that I have that has Katarn in it is Dark Forces. Although I know he has been in quite a few of the newer ones as well.

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 05:00 PM
I'm not sure when Dark Forces 1 takes place but I'm almost positive Dark Forces 2 takes place after the death star II goes boom boom, now, I can't even remember if vader is in that one... He's in the expansion pack called Mysteries of the sith.
Bah, this is gona bug me now:p:(

Drakon

You guys forgot one of the biggest changes yet...

After Vader is killled and they are back on Endor's moon, when we see the ghosts [Yoda, Kenobi, Anakin] the old Anakin is replaced with Hayden Christenson.

Captain Bryan
09-28-2004, 05:16 PM
Is he?
I don't remember that...

Drakon

Ja, go take a look at the last few mins of Jedi, then the rerelease DVD.

That's the look they started for him in Shadow's of the Empire, right? Or did they do that in DF2? I personally like the original better, no mustache or beard. I wonder if they changed the back story behind him when they changed his look? In DF 1, he was a former imperial officer who left the empire and became a mercenary for the Alliance.

No, that's still his story.
Katarn wasn't in Shadows of the Empire, that guy's name was..... Dash Rendar.
They changed his look in DF2. The cutscenes in that game were Live action video.. Pretty impressive.

This is yet another one of my boring overlong reviews that I typed for another board.

Episode IV Rating: *** out of ****
Episode V Rating: *** out of ****
Episode VI Rating: *** out of ****
Extras Rating: **** out of ****

Movie Review: A New Hope - My first Star Wars memory was when I was 8. Me and my parents were at Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood for a vacation. I remember that one of those places (don't remember which, but I'm leaning toward DL) had this really cool ride, and while you were waiting in line you heard C-3P0 and R2-D2 arguing about something, introducing the ride, ect. There was this movie theater screen in front of you and they showed you flying through space and the chairs beneath you started shaking. It was really cool. I must of went on that thing 5 times. But the first time I actually saw the movie was 10 years later when I was 17 or 18.

I can hear you all gasping at this point. That's right, I waited that long to see Star Wars. Up until that point I remember watching parts of it on TV, mostly Obi-Wan's death, his annoying "Use the Force, Luke" lines in the X-Wing, and Luke and Han getting Medals. In mid 2002 was when I actually sat down and watched it. I'm not sure if not growing up with this film made a difference in my opinion, but while I didn't think it was something to obsess over, I did quite like it. The story was fun and exciting, the sets were wonderful, and the characters...let me just put it this way: When I'm watching Star Wars, I don't see Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, or Carrie Fisher, I see Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia. A movie hasn't done this to me in a long time, that alone is a remarkable achievement.

I must point out at this point that I saw only the special edition and to this day I have never seen the originals (of any of the movies). I know that sounds odd considering I started this whole topic about Lucas changing the films, but I feel very strongly about not giving people the choice of what they want. I think Lucas is being an ass for keeping these peices of cinematic history from surfacing again.

But even though I've never seen the originals, I do know what was cut out and put in. So instead of a 70 page essay on how "Greedo shooting first makes the movie suck," I'll just point out the most notable new changes. Yes, Greedo still shoots first, only now Han jerks to the side. Jabba the Hutt's scene was cleaned up, but the CGI still doesn't look that good. The best part of the changes I think is making the lightsabers more consistant with the rest of the films. While they still don't look as good as they do in the other movies, they look a lot better. There are a few changes I've noticed in the films that are just distracting. The first would have to be when Luke is practicing with his lightsaber, it seems to be glowing green in several shots. Second, in a couple of shots the Tie-Fighters have green or brown boxes around them. Those just look wrong.

Overall, A New Hope is a fun little movie that I'll watch again, even though I have seen better.

The Empire Strikes Back - To be honest, Empire wasn't the second Star Wars movie I saw, that was the Phantom Menace, which I rented in curiosity as to what the new ones were like. Then I rented Empire.

Empire is a solid film no matter how you look at it. Dark, dirty, intense, just superior in every way to the original. The Yoda puppet in the film is outstanding. I knew I was watching something special when I actually believed that this Muppet was a living, breathing being. I also like how Luke and the rest split up for their own adventures during the movie. felt like two movies at once coming together at the end. I knew about the whole "I am your father" thing before I saw this movie (damn pop culture to hell), so it didn't come as a surprise to me, but it was still a powerful moment. I almost gave this movie 3 and a half stars, but there's one thing that always bothered me (and I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me so don't start screaming), Lando Calrissian. I don't know why I don't like him, I just don't. Maybe it's just that he comes off as a piss poor carbon copy of Han Solo, I don't know. He just rubs me the wrong way.

Noteworty changes in this chapter are that they guy who plays the Emperor in Return of the Jedi, the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and most likely Revenge of the Sith as well has been inserted into the movie in place of the old Emperor for continuity purposes. The other noted change is also for continuity purposes, the guy who plays Jango in AOTC does the voice for Boba Fett.

Empire is a sequel that rises above the original and is so far the best of the five movies.

Return of the Jedi - A 136 minute missed oportunity. Those are the best words to describe Jedi. This movie could have been the most exciting and intense of the series. Instead we get 40 minutes of filler involving Jabba the Hutt, the most annoying intergalactic ganster in history. We get 20 more minutes of filler, this time with Ewoks worshiping C-3P0 for some stupid reason I can't fathom (if this golden, homo-represed robot is a god, I'll shoot myself in the head and hope I go to hell). The movie redeams itself in it's second half however. The battle on Endor isn't that exciting, but it's fun to watch. Then there are the excelent scenes between Luke and Darth Vader, why couldn't the rest of the movie been like this?

Best change in this entire movie is the Rancor. He used to be a very poorly matted special effect, now he actually looks real. Bravo you guys. The other huge change is the end which ties it into the prequels: Jar Jar's planet with him shouting out "Weesa free!" and a young Anakin Skywalker in place of the older one during the ghost scene. While it feels like a slap in the face to Sabastian Shaw, I can understand why Lucas did it. One change I was hoping to see but sadly didn't surface would have been the dumping of that idiotic musical number at the begining. Honestly, that's one of the most embarasing things ever put on film. I should smack Lucas for that alone.

Jedi is the weakest of the original trilogy, and I'd personaly rank it weaker that Attack of the Clones as well. Maybe neck and neck with Phantom Menace for weakest of the entire series.

Extras Review: Great extras here.

Empire of Dreams is a wonderfully detailed documentary showing how the series was made.

The featurettes on the characters, the lightsabers, and the culture impact are equally great.

There are some old timey trailers and TV spots here as well. Well worth a look.

Probably the highlight would be the look at Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. I'm hyped up for this. If done right, not only could it be the best Star Wars movie, but one of the finest Science Fiction movies ever made.

While I haven't listened to the commentaries yet, I look forward to them.

Final word: If you're a Star Wars fan boy, you'd definatly want to pick this up. If you're a sci-fi fan boy, you'd definatly want to pick this up. If you're a movie fan boy, you'd definatly want to pick this up. If you're that one lonely, angry at everyone person who doesn't like Star Wars, skip it.
