NBC News has been told that former President Clinton on Friday checked himself into a New York City hospital complaining of chest pains.

Clinton was at the Milstein Pavillion of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

A source close to Clinton tells NBC News that he went to the hospital Thursday and discovered that he needed a quadruple bypass surgery. The source thought that the surgery was being scheduled for Saturday morning.

Clinton earlier canceled a two-day joint trip with his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, across upstate New York because of medical issues, a source familiar with the situation said Friday.

Spokesmen for the former president and for the senator couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

I don't see what the big deal is. Clinton is a FORMER president, so I don't see why everyone makes such a big deal about him. Well at any rate a quad-bypass surgery is pretty serious so I hope it goes well for him.

same reason as any celebrity, Ami. The public seem to care about Wynona Rider (sp) getting caught for shoplifting or Kobe Bryant's little sex uh-oh so they cover the front page with it even though this stuff happens all the time to "regular" people. Stupid, imo. Though the thing I liked about Clinton was that he had charm and charisma. Hope things work out for him.

NEW YORK - Former President Clinton underwent successful heart bypass surgery Monday at a Manhattan hospital and was resting comfortably, his spokesman said.

The medical team that performed the procedure at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia planned a 4 p.m. EDT press briefing to discuss the surgery.

“The surgery was successful and the president is resting comfortably,” Clinton spokesman Jim Kennedy said.

Preparations for the surgery began at about 6:45 a.m. at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia in upper Manhattan, a hospital source told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The surgical team was being led by Dr. Craig R. Smith, chief of cardiothoracic surgery, the source said.

Clinton, 58, was hospitalized Friday after suffering chest pains and shortness of breath.
