Barbecues to tempt hunger strikers

Israel is threatening to barbecue meat outside the cells of hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners to break their spirit.

Some 1,700 Palestinian inmates are on hunger strike for better prison conditions and more family visits, reports The Daily Star in Lebanon.

But the Israeli Prisons Service is refusing to meet the conditions and is threatening action to break the strikers' spirit.

"Among the various methods we plan to employ is holding barbecues outside the walls of the affected prisons," an Israeli Prisons Service spokesman said.

The hunger strike was praised by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat who has been confined to his West Bank compound for months.

But yea, this is rather ingenius. I bet it happens, and we just don't hear about it, because if the prisoners got wind of it, it might happen more often..

Would that be considered cruel and unusual punishment here, or just weird...?

I don't think it would be because the hunger strike is volontary, the people are just having the BBQ in hopes to get them to eat.

this is a rather odd situation, isn't it? Technically, the punishment would be depriving these prisoners of food. But they're actually TRYING to get the prisoners to eat. Then again, it may be in fear of this hunger strike actually getting them to cave in and meet the prisoners' demands for better conditions and so on.

Either way, it's going to be a long road of red tape for the personel of that prison once this is over.
