Court Approves Public Shaming of Mail Thief

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A man required to wear a signboard stating "I stole mail. This is my punishment," outside a San Francisco post office was reasonably sanctioned, a U.S. federal court said on Monday.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court's order that required mail thief Shawn Gementera to wear the sign, noting the public humiliation was intended to "break" him of an illusion he had committed a victimless crime.

Paired with requiring Gementera to write apologies and lecture at a high school, the "somewhat crude" condition he wear the signboard provided an opportunity to "repair his relationship with society," the court ruled.

Gementera had argued the signboard served no purpose other than to humiliate him.

not really. I myself think this is repulsive behaviour on the law's part. It honestly doesn't serve any civilised purpose; it's just to humiliate the thief (to paraphrase Gementera). The thief should obviously be punished for breaking the law (stealing mail, no less) but within society's law's standard means of punishment. And this is hardly what I'd call that.

Kinda funny this came up. Me and my boss were talking last night about punishment, and the shackles came up. You know, the ones that lock your head and arms, and leave you standing. Well, I never thought of it much, but imagine some drunk dude coming out the bar. Hes horny, and all he sees is an ass waiting to happen. I mean, hell, its not like you can fight back. And you wont know what he looks like.

If your going to humiliate someone why not just tie them to a stake in the middle of the town or whatever like they did in the 1700s.
