Playboy faces age discrimination lawsuit

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A Playboy editor who was fired after more than 30 years with the company filed a federal suit, claiming he was dismissed because the magazine wanted a younger staff that might attract younger readers.

The suit, filed Wednesday by John Rezak against Playboy Enterprises in U.S. District Court in Chicago, seeks unspecified damages, including back and future pay.

Rezak, 54, was an associate managing editor when he was fired last November.

His suit said Playboy Enterprises wanted more readers ages 18 to 34.

According to the complaint, Executive Vice President Howard S. Shapiro said in March 2003 that the company believed the only way to change the "demographics of the magazine was to change the demographics of the people who put the magazine out."

Messages seeking comment were left Thursday at Playboy offices in Chicago and New York.

The company told the Illinois Department of Employment Security that Rezak's position was relocated to New York.

Rezak said in the lawsuit that he offered to moved to New York, but the company told him he was not invited, citing a "difference in sensibility and a duplication of skill sets."

The lawsuit claimed Rezak's duties were then assigned to someone much younger.

I actually agree with Playboy. Though, I don't blame the guy for filing a lawsuit against them. It's not like they can't afford it, but he'll probably lose and end up worse then when he started because of legal fees.

I don't think he will loose.

He should lose........... its up to Playboy what image they want to promote and who should do it.

If they said that he just wasnt the image they were looking for then nothing could be done.
They did the daft thing of mentioning his age, that will probably get them into bother.
I say the guy should suck it up and get on with it.

He won't win because of the lawyers that Playboy can afford. They'll find a way to discredit him, make Playboy look like they were right, make sure there's no one who can relate on the jury, and basically make it look like he's only doing this for money and was in fact fired for another reason. They'll find witnesses to agree with every point they make and in the end the poor guy will probably be facing some pretty steep legal fees.

I agree with Atrax. It is up to them what kind of image they want to promote, but they shouldn't have mentioned his age. In a way, I hope he wins, but at the same time, I don't think he should.
