View Full Version : A Rant on Car Repair

I'm warning ahead of time that this might get a bit vulgar.

I just took my car up to a shop to get the power steering issues worked out. Turns out it's going to cost me six hundred bucks because the fucking labor cost is 75 bucks an hour, and that's the cheapest I've seen around here.

What the fuck is with this? Why can't we have cars that don't take so damn long to repair? Christ, I could build a Lego car for less than 600 bucks, and if the thing worked, it'd be hella easier to fix than this.

My car's old, but my mother and girlfriend both own newer cars, and their repair costs are similar, if not more. I remember the government "investigating" Big Oil to boost their votes. Why not investigate Big Cars and figure out why their shit is so expensive to repair!?

I told you, mate. For all the money you're sinking into that old Jalopy, you could get a newer car which would work better.

There is no point in repairing an american car more than 5 years old.

Warning. Extremely Insensitive Comment Alert:
Cry more.

Seriously though. For the most part, car repair is not an easy field if you're not experienced or mechanically inclined. It's a service and they have to make a living. From their point of view, not everyday a car breaks down or there is something to be fixed so there can be droughts for their income. It may seems utterly ridiculous and over priced to you but is it something you can fix on your own? Is the cost frustrating enough that you're willing to learn? Do you have the hours to burn on learning such an endeavor? If so, then take that route?

When you pay someone else to make or repair something for you, you're paying for the convenience of not having to do it yourself and the professionalism that is supposed to come with the work. If the costs are two high for you, then find another route.

Yes, I do understand that it was just a rant of frustration but boredom makes me less than kind. There is no point in repairing an american car more than 5 years old.
Cars are sounding more and more like computers these days.

You're mean, Mix. :( But I can see where you're coming from and I'd agree with you. Though I'd say Rock is well within his rights to bitch about it, regardless. It's not like he's trying to change how things are run.

I bitch about Drakon all the time. It doesn't mean I don't get why he does what he does or that I want him to change. ;)
