For a moment there, I was tempted to get the $100 one...but for now, I think I'll be happy with just the Superman Returns DVD. Though that Richard Donner cut of "Superman II" has sounded interested since I first heard about it.

I've been meaning to get the Superman Movies anyway [since, with the exception of Batman Beings, my DC DVD collection is well....not], so I might just drop a few bucks towards a layaway on this.

I think these DVDs sound phenominal, even though I'm dissappointed on several things, such as both cuts of Superman II not being combined into their own set (other than this Ultimate Edition, they're being released seperatly), and the lack of extras love on III and IV (even Batman Forever and Batman & Robin got themselves the motherload on their special editions).

I'm definatly going to be getting all of these discs though. While I've always been more of a Batman fan, I skipped the collection they released last year simply because, as an adult, I have realized just how incredibly bad all four films were (yes even the Burton films, especially Returns. At least Schumacher's were a little more playful). I think I now hold the Superman films to a much higher esteem, even though I still find the original to be overrated and IV is...well...IV.

I'm definatly looking forward to that Richard Donner cut of II. It's my favorite of the group, and if this cut can make it even better, then I'm all for it!

I kind of figured you'd go for the Ultimate Edition. :p You should hold a Q4 party at your place and invite everyone to view the Donner cut of Superman II. ;)

The only copies I have of any of these movies are crummy recordings of I, II, and IV off of HBO and Starz. To upgrade to something like this is just way too tempting.

Coming from you, that's a bit surprising. I figured you'd at least have them on original VHS copies. I'm starting to get tempted to buy this. The only Superman movie I have is the barebone DVD of the first one.

Well, if we're including VHS, I've got Returns and Forever.

Well, I already said I wasn't that big on them growing up. But watching them when Superman Returns came out, I realized just how fun they were. This set is a must have for me.

I would just prefer the movies. I don't think I'd bother with about 14 DVDs.

Well the original film alone has 4 discs dedicated to it. A little much, I agree, but it's often called the greatest superhero film of all time, so maybe they're just making sure the obsessive LOTR types are happy.

Well, I'm a special features whore, too. I refuse to buy a movie with no special features [the only one I have is "Ginger Snaps", and it's burned], so that makes me happy. At least I know where my money is going, if nothing else.

I don't mind special features. But usually, I don't bother with them. Just the movie, deleted/alternate scenes, trailers and GOOD commentaries are usually all I ask for. Sometimes, there are some other stuff I might be interested in. I did enjoy the special features in the "Dawn of the Dead" DVD (the remake).

Yeah, the basic stuff makes me happy. Pretty much every other feature is redundant.

One thing I'm starting to notice is that many big budget films have a featurette devoted to the special effects, yet they all say the same damn thing. It's starting to bore me.

Do they? I haven't bothered with any of the "special effects" featurettes on any DVDs, yet apart from the special costumes and make-up for particular zombies in the "Dawn of the Dead" remake.

In particular, Commentaries, Deleted/Alternate Scenes, and trailors are necessary. I also like special effects/makeup featurettes, and if it's comic based, I always look at the comic featurettes.

Personally, I don't mind a barebone DVD as long as the price isn't above $10. I got Batman, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Superman and Mortal Kombat. Heck, even the 1960's Batman movie DVD has a good menu and some features.

But I'm not keen on watching a collection of featurettes which come up to 10 times the total runtime of the actual movie. I don't mind having them around, though. Some special effects ones are kind of neat, like the stuff for Hulk or Advent Children. I'm normally bored with the stuff that recounts the cast and crews' experiences in making the movie, though.

That stuff I usually only watch once, but like for a long running series [like Friday the 13th], it's always nice to see a "history of" style featurette.

Indeed. This is my main problem with the production diaries on the King Kong DVD. While it was a nice tease for the audience anticipating the movie, they are so repetative and boring now that the film is actually released. Other than the documentaries on Skull Island and the 30s, it really wasn't worth the upgrade to a 2 disc set for that movie.

But I, like Drakon, love history documentaries on film series or whatever a film is based upon. I wish more DVDs did them, and I was let down that the DVD to X3 didn't have one on it's source material. Sure X2 had a decent one, but I felt it barely scratched the surface.

I felt the same way. But I was still pretty satisfied with some of the stuff on the X1.5 DVD.

I'm a big fan of commentaries, especially director commentaries. I enjoy making-of docs too, like the LOTR 4-disc sets.

I enjoy commentaries, but pretty much only if it's not one person doing them. Commentaries are much more lively if there is more than one person in the room.

Best commentary of all time...Evil Dead II. It's easily just as entertaining as the movie.

For those of you who have your heart set on that Ultimate set, DVD Active reports what they call a Super Blunder (http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/super-blunder.html). Basicly the Superman III discs are the exactly the same as the previous release, so no commentary and no new transfer.

It's avoided by buying it in the Christopher Reeve set. It may be more expensive to buy them all seperatly, but I'll probably end up doing that.
