I'm not a very big Gamera fan. His original series was a complete insult to the Kaiju genre. It's a wonder it lasted as long as it did, even if it was aimed at little kids.

That said, I was watching the MST version of the original Gamera a few days ago and for some reason I felt the urge to dig out my old video tape of Guardian of the Universe, Gamera's restart film from 1995. This was probably only the third time I watched it since I blind bought it 6 years ago. I remember being very disappointed, especially since it was considered one of the greatest Kaiju films ever made.

But, upon watching it and the original back to back, I did enjoy it a great deal more this time around. No matter how one looks at it, this was indeed a step up from the original series. I still don't consider it the greatest of the Kaiju genre, but I admire it for being ambitious. Not only did they take a laughing stock like Gamera and churned out a respectful movie under his name, they even seem to take the idea of a giant turtle flying around like a UFO and say it with a straight face without it ever seeming wrong. I like the whole ancient civilization angle to explain it all. I also liked some of the wilder visual ideas they tried in the film, like trying to trap the Gyaos in the baseball stadium. The Godzilla films always stayed out in the open, and I thought that was a pretty cool and refreshing idea. The darker tone was also welcome, even if it does feel rediculous given Deiei's kaiju creations have always been on the slightly out there side.

Still not fond of the whole psychic link angle. I wasn't all that into it during the Heisei Godzilla films, and I wasn't here either. "Gamera needs my strength!" So he's the all mighty Guardian of the Universe but he needs to draw his energy from a 14 year old girl? Bull shit. Perhaps this was just their way of trying to keep "Friend to children of all!"

But it did get me to blind buy the other two entries into this series off of Amazon. Haven't arrived yet, but my curiousity in this series will probably never be this high again. 3 is supposed to be spectacular, so I hope it lives up to it's reputation.

On a sidenote, the new Gamera the Brave film just opened in Japan and flopped. Supposedly it was a much lighter take on the character than this series, and while I heard it was still respectable, just too much of a letdown after this series to hold iself up.

In conclusion, all Gamera conversation must bring one thing up, so I'll do it for you...

"Gamera is really neat!
He is made of turtle meat!
We've been eating Gamera!"

How so?

Anyway, I never stopped to think our resident Kaiju fan never spoke of the lovable space turtle. I found the concept pretty funny. Giant space turtle with jets on its back or something.

If you have to ask, you've never seen them. If you ever have the opportunity to check out the five MSTed Gamera films, give them a whirl.

I'm sure the series has it's supporters, but it's just too childish for me. I even tried watching the MST episodes back to back, and they never failed to give me a headache. Some people bitch about the 70's Godzilla films being aimed at children, but the Gamera films took it to a level not even Godzilla vs. Megalon dreamed of.

Plus I've never particularly cared for Deiei's kaiju designs. They seem so slapped together at the last minute. Even Gamera himself seems very lazy in comparison to some of Toho's weakest creations.

A six year old may have some fun with it, but I find the originals hypnoticly bad.

It sounds so ridiculous that now I have to watch it. :(

If you're really that brave, might I suggest Gamera vs. Barugon? It may have the least Gamera in it (he's only there for 10 minutes, tops) but it's probably the least annoying of the series.

Not to mention, no Kennies (Kenny being the adopted name of all annoying children in short-shorts found in Japanese films, coined by none other than the original Gamera itself).

Just finished watching Attack of Legion, and it was just as disappointing as my original viewing of GOTU. AOL lacks the ambition that made GOTU fun, and instead just seems to be going through the motions. One could point out that all Kaiju films in one way or another "go through the motions," but AOL doesn't even play around with the concept to make it entertaining.

Imagine Godzilla X Megaguirus, only without it's fun additude. AOL may predate Megaguirus by 4 years, but it feels so much drier. Out of all the Kaiju films I've seen, AOL is most comparable to Godzilla vs. Biollante. It's well made, and other Kaiju fans seem to love it, but I found it dull and lacking of any real interest. It adds nothing to GOTU, and while Legion is an interesting villian, he's not enough to make the movie engaging.

Not to mention how laughably bad some of Gamera's new abilities are. His arms turning into wings brought on some good laughs, and the way he took care of Legion came completly out of left field and left me scratching my head.

Maybe it will improve upon repeat viewings like GOTU had, but as of yet, this trilogy isn't living up to it's praise. Revenge of Iris is supposed to be one of the best Kaiju films ever made, but I won't get around to watching it until tomarrow. I watched the trailers on the DVD, and they alone make it look like the best of the three, so even after AOL's letdown, I'm have some hope for ROI.

I got a little chuckle reading your last post since you kept using the "Attack of Legion" acronym "AOL". I just kept thinking "America OnLine" while I was reading it. :(

And how does Gamera end up 'taking care' of Legion?

And how does Gamera end up 'taking care' of Legion?

A bunch of yellow force-like shit comes out of the sky and he sucks it up, then the front of his shell opens and he shoots it out like a cannon. They actually attempted to explain this in the third film, but it still seems rather odd.

Last night I watched Revenge of Iris, and let's just say that it more than made up for Attack of Legion. I guess I'm now apart of the bandwagon that says ROI is everything a kaiju film should be and thensome. What Godzilla vs. Destoroyah did for the Godzilla series, AOL does for Gamera. It brings something new and completly different to the table, while providing a mirror of the first film in the process.

Only real complaint is that the Gamera suit sucked. They were trying to make him look more badass, but the end result is just ugly, and it never looks right.

But Gamera 3 has a new fan. Best Gamera movie ever. Not saying much, but whatever.
