Marvel and EA to Develop New Superhero Games Source: Electronic Artists Thursday, February 5, 2004

Electronic Arts and Marvel Enterprises, Inc. announced today that they have entered into an agreement, whereby EA will develop a new generation of fighting video games pitting Super Heroes from the Marvel Universe against a new, original set of EA heroes.

Under the multi-year agreement, EA has been granted a license to develop and distribute fighting games featuring the Marvel Super Heroes. Additionally, EA has granted Marvel the exclusive rights as worldwide licensing agent for all consumer products and media licensing for the new EA heroes. Marvel will publish new comic books introducing the EA characters. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for EA to create new characters for fighting games that can be exploited through our global merchandise licensing machine to fuel sales in many other product categories," said Allen Lipson, President and CEO of Marvel Enterprises.

"It's a unique opportunity, partnering with Marvel to bring their renowned Super Heroes into original videogame environments, as well as providing us an opportunity to create new heroes that will live in games, comic books and other licensing or media opportunities that Marvel presents," said John Riccitiello, President and COO for Electronic Arts. "Fans of both traditional Marvel comics as well as video games have a lot to be excited about as they will be able to fight it out between established Marvel Super Heroes and EA's new heroes in original scenarios," added Riccitiello.

The Marvel and EA Super Hero based fighting games are currently under development for multiple game platforms at EA's studio, EAC, in British Columbia. The license grants EA the rights to develop game titles for all current and next generation videogame consoles, handheld platforms and PCs.

Capcom is the undisputed Ruler of 2D fighters. And Marvel is the most sucessful comic publication around. So, Unless Marvel was tryin to go 3D, then they should have stuck with Capcom. If they DID decide to go with 3D, then Im sure that they can get a better group than EA. Perhaps Namco, or even Midway.

Marvel's done 3D fighting games before, Drak...

This new idea just reeks of $$$ desires and no thought. But that's just me. Hey, it might turn out to be a new brand of "MvC" games...then moving on to comics, shows, movies and more things to make even more money....

God, money sure does make the world go 'round.

Do you mean Capcom has done 3D games? Cause if thats what you meant, then I know that. I remember SF Ex. Tho I cant say I remember it fondly. It's just that they do 2D so well, and they need to improve on 3D. I approve of them making new games in 3D to get better at it, so to speak, but I dont think they should take such a successful franchise to do that with.

Have you played that game? The Camera Sucks, for starters. You can do an airslam, and your victim gets stuck in mid-air, you can easily glitch thru the walls in Apocalypse's Tomb, not to mention all the times that the Camera just decides to look at something that has nothing to do with the fight.

The collision detection is just as bad, especially with NightCrawler and Wolverine. There have been many a time when I shouldn't have been able to get a special off, and I have, and vice versa. I have also been trapped in the Limbo Zone with NC and whomever I decide to go against. Its really rather frusterating.

The voice acting is mediocre, at best. Most notably is when they spit out the SAME line over and over again. ["Heart is what wins battles". "I've got six reasons for you to walk away"."Lipshen, you are embarassing me".] And the actual acting is even worse than the original Resident Evil series.

On the plus side, the gameplay is fun. All the characters are well represented, as are their abilities. The combo system has been tweaked from the last few Xmen Mutant Ac. games, as has the flow of the battle.

Overall, I give this game a 4/10. I paid 10 bucks for it, and I got my moneys worth. Almost.

No. I mean that Next Dimension was a 3D game with Marvel characters. As well as Mutant Academy 1 and 2. And that Wolverine game that came out recently.

whoops....umm...Atrax, in case you're wondering: your post hasn't been deleted. I, um, was testing something and had a backup of the forum that was 3 hours ago, thus wiping your post and any during the past 3 hours from existence. I'm sorry, dude. My bad. :( :(

This Obviosly wasn't a smart move by Marvel. They should've went back to Capcom and done an MvC4 for even More mayhem. MvC2 is like still one of, if not, The most played Arcade Fighting Game since its release. Not a bold move IMO.....

Yeah, they weren't that good. Atleast 'Capcom fighting All Stars' looked promising, but Capcom canned it:o .....

I'm realising that "big" companies make so a lot of the stupidest mistakes....
